Out of which six philosophies collectively are well known as ”Sudarshana”.
Yoga is one of the philosophies out of six orthodox systems; they are Sankhya (Kapila), Yoga (Patanjali), Nyaya (Gautama), Vaisesika (Kanada), Purva Mimamsa (Jaimini) and Uttara Mimamsa (Vyasa).
Great Importance of Guru in Yoga
Yoga is a practical philosophy based on scientific and theoretical observations. It is highly beneficial for the human being who follow it properly and systematically by the guidance of the eminent guru. Maharshi Patanjali was the first codified in the field of yoga who has lived about 2,300 years back. He explained the yoga philosophy in sutras called “Patanjali Yoga Sutra”. It consists of four (padas) chapters with 196 aphorisms.

The present world is becoming more and more materialistic because of globalization and urbanization. A man has to face tough competition and run the risk and tension in his strive to achieve luxuriant life. This leads him to several psychosomatic disorders. The only way out is Yoga which soothes both mind and body.

What is Yoga Science
Yoga is the science of right living and should be incorporated in our daily life. It works on all aspects of a person the physical, mental, emotional, psychic and spiritual. Yoga achieves the physical and mental synchronization and harmonizes working of the two.
Yoga is an ancient science based on an extremely subtle science, that of the body, mind, and soul. The prolonged practice of yoga, in time, will lead the student to a sense of peace and a feeling of being at one with his or her environment.
The relationship between a word and its meaning is eternal. It cannot be fabricated. The term yoga has various meanings like ‘Union of Jivatma and Paramatma’, ‘the union of Prana and Apana’, ‘Samadhi’, etc. as well as other technical, derivative and conventional meanings.
Importance of Yoga in Vedas
The word yoga is a noun form derived from the Sanskrit root “Yujir2” meaning to unite or connect. The noun yoga was thus originally used to designate a union or connection between various things. Vedic seers used this word to denote ‘connection between verses and words’.
Similarly, various Vedic texts which go by names of sutras, Brahmanas and Aranyakas used the word ‘Yoga’ in the sense of Conjunction or Connection.
